Wines from Queensland’s Granite Belt coming to the UK
We are pleased to announce that Wines Unfurled will be introducing a great selection of wines from award winning Australian winemakers Sirromet located in Queensland’s granite belt. This is the first time wines from Queensland will be available in the UK
Just recently Sirromet announced that they had passed a milestone of winning 500 medals and awards since opening in 2000.
Sirromet has 150 hectares of vineyards at Balladean some 150 miles southwest of Brisbane. At an altitude of around 800 metres the cool climate and rich granite soils provide ample opportunity to produce highly desirable fruit quality. The Granite Belt climate is sub tropical but the high altitude makes this a cool climate area. Shiraz is the main red grape with significant plantings of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The main white varieties are Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdehlo.
Our range of wines from the Sirromet Signature collection will include a Chardonnay, a Merlot, a Petit Verdot based sparkling red and a sweet red fortified Sunwine made using the mistelle process.
The Sunwine is made from an unusual grape called Chambourcin which is a commercial French hybrid (a cross between a US vine and a European one) and was particularly popular in the Muscadet area. It has a deep colour and a relatively aromatic flavour. Now no longer allowed to be used in France it has found a home in Australia from New South Wales right up to Queensland. Mistelle is the French term for a mixture of grape juice and alcohol. The fermentation is stopped by adding alcohol leaving a sweet stable wine with a higher alcohol level.
The wines are due to arrive in our bonded warehouse early in September and will further complement our range of unique, hand-crafted wines from small, independent vineyards.
